Music and Family
I decided to interview my mother, because she was listening to a lot of music whenever she was younger and so I thought that she would be the best choice to pick.
Me : Mom, what kind of music were you listening to when you were a teenager in the '80s?
Mom: That was a great time for music. I used to listen to a lot of pop and hip-hop. Artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince were everywhere. There was also some funk and R&B.
Me : Who was your favorite singer and their best song ?
Mom : I was a really big fan of Whitney Houston, she had an amazing voice and she made so many hits that people are still listening to, like "I will always love you". Another one is, Michael Jackson for sure. I remember when the song "Thriller" came out, it made a so big impact, it was huge and everyone was talking about it. Also, the clips that he was doing at that time were amazing for the technology that we had. What I find the most impressive, is that to this day, he still influences younger generations with his songs, which is why I think, he is the best singer of all time.
Me : I think you're right about that, because even me, I listen to his music sometimes and I love the voice that he had without autotune. Another question that I had for you was, what do you think about the evolution of the music styles since then ?
Mom : Well, I think the big difference is how many different genres have blended together. Back then, pop was pop, rock was rock, and rap was its own thing. But now, you hear everything mixed up. It’s not strange to hear a pop song with rap verses, or electronic beats with folk influences. The lines between genres have really blurred.
Me : Do you think that’s a good thing?
`Mom: I do, it makes music more creative. But I also feel like there’s something special about the simplicity of older music. The 80s and 90s were all about big personalities and catchy melodies, and sometimes today, with all the technology, it can feel like some of that personality got lost.
Me : Do you think technology has had a huge impact on music?
Mom : Definitely! The way people create music today is so different. Artists can produce entire albums from their bedrooms, and anyone can release a song online. It’s much more democratized, but it also means there’s a lot more music out there to listen to.
Me: Thank you for taking the time to answer to all those questions.
Mom : You are welcome !
I like your mom's take on music being made nowadays. It's true that music is being made online nowadays, but that just means that there will be more people who have access to these networks! I didn't think I had heard any of Whitney Houston's songs till I read this blog, so I'm glad to know the name of a song I really enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThis interview with your mom is cool! Music in the 80s and 90s are so classic. It’s interesting to hear how music has evolved over the years, and I agree with her point about how the blending of genres has made music more creative. Great job my friend!
ReplyDeleteHey Nico, good job on your blog this week! I found some similarities with my mom and your mom. They both explained how music in the 80's and 90's were classic and timeless. I like where your mom said that technology and social media had changed music and how accessible music can be. As well, both my and your mom are big Michael Jackson and Madonna fans. Great work Nico.
ReplyDeleteHi Nico, This interview is a great read and to see how music in different countries is different but also how artist such as Michael Jackson was a big influence in europe as well as America is cool to see. I can imagine you found this interesting and fun to do with your mum. My dad also mentioned how technology has changed music a lot and he said it is crazy how easier it is now to access music compared to back when he was young. Great post .
ReplyDeleteLove Michael Jackson and every generation that has experienced him in video form or when he was doing concerts all recognize he is one of the greats of music, no discussion. Hearing your Mom mention Prince too is really cool because he is a personal favorite of this era to me, while Michael Jackson is the undisputed goat Prince was putting out quality after quality project and at times was putting out better music than Michael with his album "Purple Rain". Overall great interview, thanks for sharing Nico!
